1. Overpacking

Its only natural to want to be prepared for every occasion and every weather event, however, part of the freedom of traveling is being free from your stuff. What ever you take, you'll be lugging from place to place, and packing and unpacking every few days. A good rule of thumb is to pack everything you think you'll need, then halve it. Pack versatile attire that can be mixed and matched and layered for most occasions. You'll need a comfortable pair of sneakers that go with most things, and some sandals that are comfortable, yet a little dressy for summer or some nice boots for winter. For the kids, think darker color tops and patterns that can camouflage a few food spills. When going for more than a week you will be doing a load of washing every 4-5 days and we highly recommend just taking the largest size carry on luggage (56 x 36 x 23cm) and an expandable back pack. Our top recommendation is the Tzowla travel backpack. There are some fantastic easy to carry kids luggage sets that also make amazing pre trip gifts. Organize your suitcases with individualized and color coded packing cubes to avoid jumbled up suitcases. You'll find travel days much easier when you simply have to throw a few packing cubes in your suitcase. For in-between days where you may need to hang up some bathers and towels, a travel laundry kit is a must, I always like to add a portable clothesline, some laundry sheets and a bar of Sard Wonder Soap. Travel towels are essential as they not only compact, but also dry before you have to repack your suitcase.

2. Not Planning Ahead

Research your destination ahead of time and make a list of kid-friendly activities and attractions. Book tickets in advance and skip the line to avoid long queues. Be prepared that children may not be interested in seeing the same things as adults, so you need to find a balance of activities that pique their interest. On our recent trip to Paris, our girls moaned their way through the Louvre, only to be delighted by a the mouth watering array of cakes at Caffe Concerto.

3. Over planning Activities

While it's important to have a list of activities, over planning can lead to stress and disappointment. Be flexible and allow for spontaneous adventures or simply enjoying the moment. One or two planned activities per day is ample.

4. Ignoring Safety Precautions

Safety should always be a priority when traveling with kids. If they are young, bring or hire necessary safety gear such as car seats, strollers, and childproofing supplies. Also, teach your kids about basic safety rules and have a plan in case they get lost. Making a wrist band with your mobile number on it or an Airtag tracker wrist band could give you piece of mind if you are going to very crowded places or public transport.

5. Skipping Snacks and Entertainment

Long flights or car rides can be boring for kids. Pack plenty of snacks, travel games, cards, and activities to keep them entertained. This will help prevent meltdowns and make the journey more enjoyable for everyone. You can download your kids favorite movie or shows with streaming apps such as Netflix so you can even watch it offline.

6. Not Allowing for Downtime

While it's important to make the most of each destination you visit, it's also crucial to allow for downtime. Kids get tired easily, so make sure to schedule breaks and rest periods to avoid crankiness and exhaustion.

7. Overlooking Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is often overlooked, but it's essential when traveling with kids. It provides coverage for unexpected medical expenses, trip cancellations, and lost luggage. Don't leave home without it! You can also check if your credit card provider has travel insurance included. Some require that you make a purchase over a certain value towards your trip like booking your flights or accommodation. If you plan on participating in any adrenaline pumping sports like skiing, be sure to check that your covered with your insurance, you may need to take out a specific policy.

8. Not Checking Passport Validity

Before embarking on your trip, check the passport validity for both you and your kids. You need to allow at least 6 weeks for passports to be issued or renewed. Some countries require passports to be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry.

9. Not Researching Child-Friendly Accommodations

Choosing child-friendly accommodations can make a huge difference in your trip. Look for hotels or resorts that offer amenities such as kids' clubs, playgrounds, and swimming pools. The location of your accommodation can also be important, being in walking distance to good public transport, many attractions and restaurants will also help those little legs get from A to B.

10. Ignoring Local Customs and Etiquette

Research the local customs and etiquette of your destination to avoid any cultural misunderstandings. Teach your kids about the basic do's and don'ts to ensure respectful behavior. Local laws and dress codes may be different particularly if visiting religious sites and temples.

11. Not Packing Medications and checking vaccination requirements.

Don't forget to pack any necessary medications for your kids. Fill prescriptions to cover your time away. While some medications are more readily available overseas, it could be costly to see a GP overseas. You also need to be aware that some countries have strict rules about bringing medication into their country including ADHD medication and cold and flu medication. Many countries also have reciprocal healthcare agreements with Australia. It's also a good idea to bring a basic first aid kit for minor injuries or illnesses. Check the smartraveller website for everything you need to know about traveling to your destinations, vaccinations, travel warnings and local laws. Before you go, see your health care provider about infectious diseases risks and any recommended vaccinations for you and your family.

12. Not Having a Budget

Traveling with kids can be expensive, so it's important to set a budget and stick to it. Have all your big ticket items like accommodation, car hire and reservations paid for in advance. You need to know that you can get to the end of your trip with a contingency fund if travel plans don't go to plan. Research affordable dining options and free or discounted activities for kids.

13. Not Bringing Comfort Items

Comfort items such as a favorite blanket or stuffed animal can provide a sense of familiarity and security for your kids. Don't forget to pack these items to help them feel more at ease. If they sleep with a night light, you may want to take this compact version that plugs into your USB charger.

14. Not Embracing the Unexpected

Lastly, embrace the unexpected. Traveling with kids can be unpredictable, but it's also an opportunity for adventure and bonding. Embrace the ups and downs and create lasting memories.

By avoiding these 14 mistakes when traveling with kids, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable trip for the whole family. Remember to pack smart, plan ahead and embrace the unexpected. With these tips in mind, you're ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure with your little ones!
